The course is aimed at students who desire to gain a set score for entrance into university or to register with professional bodies. It prepares students for the Academic IELTS module – the appropriate test for these goals. Students study the language and skills necessary to help them achieve the necessary score in the IELTS test.

Students can study on a part-time (8.5 hours per week) or full-time (16 hours per week) basis. The courses are designed by our senior tutors who have a great deal of experience tutoring IELTS and an in depth knowledge of this challenging examination.

The course consists of grammar and general IELTS preparation classes, in which students improve their listening, speaking, academic reading and writing skills for the exam. The programme also includes intensive speaking and writing sessions. The weekly practice test is supervised and monitored by the Director of Studies and helps students familiarise themselves with the test format and procedures and also acts as a self-measuring tool for students. Weekly feedback is given to students on an individual basis following the test.

Students are required to have a proven intermediate level of English to take this course. The course is run on a continuous enrolment basis from September to June. The cost of the examination (£115) and is NOT included in the course fees and students must enrol for the examination directly. Your Personal Tutor can help to guide you through the registration process.

All students receive a Peartree Languages certificate at the end of the course. This certificate will show your name, your start date, your end date, your course type and your final level.

The IELTS test (International English Language Testing System) has an examination centre in Cardiff located at Deri House, Cardiff University, Roath (map available). The Cardiff centre runs an examination approximately once per month. It is possible to take this examination in any centre of your choice at any location in the world. The test is standardised worldwide.

The IELTS test is becoming increasingly popular and it is important to book your test at least three months in advance of when you would like to take it to ensure you are allocated a place, especially in the summer months of May – August. Application forms are available in the Peartree Languages Office. We can help you to complete your application form and you must then go personally to the IELTS office to register. We cannot register you for the exam at Peartree. We will help to make this process as easy as possible for you. Results take two weeks to be issued. The Test Fee is GBP 115.00.

It is increasingly common for native speakers to be required to take the I.E.L.T.S examination, either the General Training or Academic Module for immigration purposes to countries such as Australia and New Zealand.

Despite English being a first language many candidates struggle to achieve the score they need due to the complicated nature of the examination.
